The Friends of St Mary's Church, Polstead

Registered Charity No. 1116464

The Friends of Polstead Church was set up at the end of 2005 with the objective of supporting Polstead Parochial Church Council in the preservation of Polstead Church and its surroundings.

The Friends is a registered charity entirely devoted to conservation of the church building and churchyard for posterity.

The origins of the church go back to the 653 AD when St Cedd preached under the Gospel Oak in the grounds of Polstead Hall, adjoining the present churchyard.

St Mary's Polstead

The church building was an important church in the early middle ages and its medieval character has survived, with its unique Romanesque arches and ancient masonry walls with material dating back to Roman times.

Above all, Polstead Church occupies a beautiful position overlooking the Box Valley towards its sister church at Stoke by Nayland. The church has a timeless atmosphere of peace.
