We had a very interesting talk given by Richard Heap, titled “Silk Weaving in Sudbury”. Mr Heap works for Stephen Walters and Sons in Sudbury. Stephen Walters is a family owned company founded in 1720. They were originally in Spitalfields in London, but were taxed heavily, so moved out of London and the mill was established in Sudbury in 1860. Fine umbrella and parasol silks were produced, and even parachute silks in the 1940’s. They have over 40 looms in the mill weaving a huge variety of fabric to order with exceptional quality.
Polstead WI are looking forward to their “Strawberry Tea Afternoon” in Polstead Village Hall on Thursday 19th July, from 2pm to 4pm. All welcome £3 per ticket.
